150 km/h on Czech Motorways?
The Czech Republic is launching a pilot project in which a speed limit of 150 km/h will be permitted. The project is based on a change in the law from 2023, which makes it possible to implement such a change for the first time in almost 30 years.
From the end of September this year, a speed of 150 km/h will be permitted on a 50-kilometre stretch of the D3 between Tábor and České Budějovice, possibly also the D1 towards Ostrava and the D11 near Hradec Králové, but only in good weather and traffic conditions. However, the last two sections have not been approved for the project yet. It remains to be seen how the project will develop on the D3.
Because of the unpredictable conditions, permanently installed speed limit signs are not practical. Instead, 42 new electronic variable traffic signs have been installed. Depending on the conditions, they indicate the speed at which vehicles may travel.
This pilot project is exciting because it is the first of its kind in the EU. In any case, the goal is very meaningful, because it should optimise and adjust traffic flow. This is particularly important in this new era, when the roads are becoming increasingly congested.
