New hand baggage regulations in force since 1.9.2024

Since 1st September 2024, new regulations have been in force for hand luggage on planes. In consequence of the implementation of enhanced security measures at airports, the regulations pertaining to the carriage of liquids in hand luggage have undergone a modest degree of relaxation. While not a universal policy, some airports have permitted two-litre bottles to be transported without incident.

However, since 1 September, the relaxation has been reversed. The 100ml limit is now explicitly applicable at all European and British airports. A single sealable, transparent one-litre plastic bag, measuring a maximum of 20 x 20 centimetres, is permitted per passenger.

It is required that the item in question be removed from the bag on a regular basis and placed in the designated receptacle. In a manner analogous to that observed with laptops and other electrical devices. Nevertheless, this is subject to variation depending on the airport in question and the availability of CT scanning equipment.

The existing scanners are inadequate and do not provide the requisite level of security. There is considerable doubt as to the efficacy of the security measures employed by the scanners. Consequently, only containers of a maximum capacity of 100ml may be used, unless this has already been done. Nevertheless, there are viable alternatives, such as solid shampoo. Such products are not classified as liquids. Additionally, exceptions exist for medication that must be taken during the flight, as well as for baby food, which can also be carried on board.

Moreover, standardised regulations on baggage may soon be introduced, for example, on small and large hand luggage and backpacks only. Previously, the decision was left to the discretion of the airline, but it remains to be seen whether this will become a requirement across the EU.
