Trucks need safe parking spaces!

Some trucks transport goods worth millions, and organised criminals are aware of this. Trucks carrying consumer goods, such as cigarettes, computers, and games consoles, are particularly vulnerable. According to statistics, around 400,000 trucks needed a parking space every night in 2022, and this figure is expected to increase by a further 100,000 trucks over the next 15 years. Trade associations estimate that around 26,000 of these trucks will be stolen, sometimes by force. However, it's not just the thefts themselves that are problematic; delivery delays, repair costs, loss of sales and production losses are also consequences of the thefts.

In response to these issues, the German Insurance Association has discussed with the Transport Committee ways to make car parks safer and protect drivers. One proposal is that car parks should only be accessible with authorisation and be fenced off and illuminated. Round-the-clock surveillance should also be implemented.

The associations also want to improve transport logistics security in general. For example, trucks could be fitted with telematics systems to monitor their routes. Furthermore, box trailers with electronic locking systems could be used.

Developed in collaboration with the German Employers' Liability Insurance Association for Vehicle Maintenance and the Federal Criminal Police Office, this project will be implemented across Europe to enhance safety and service.

The associations are also appealing to the police and security authorities to increase their presence in high-risk areas, and to put more pressure on international, professional criminal organisations to ensure that they are pursued.
