EU Commission: Old vehicles to be inspected annually?

In view of the constant need to protect and improve road safety, the EU Commission has put forward a new proposal to improve this.

Until now, the minimum period for a private vehicle to be re-submitted to the Technical Inspection Agency was 24 months. Newer vehicles have to be presented after 36 months.

By shortening the period, the EU Commission hopes to reduce road accidents and the number of people involved in accidents by at least one percent.

Specifically, the EU Commission wants to reduce the deadline to 12 months for vehicles over 10 years old. This proposal is based on statistics showing that older cars are more prone to breakdowns and are therefore more often involved in accidents.
It remains to be seen to what extent this proposal will find favour with the European Parliament. So far, there are no clear indications that the 24-month period would not be sufficient. The system has always worked well and is a good monitoring tool.

It remains to be seen how the Parliament will react.
