Is autonomous driving coming to Germany?

There is currently a lot of discussion about cars at European and national levels. The focus is on supporting the automotive industry, which is to be achieved through initiatives such as promoting autonomous driving and introducing an obligation for petrol stations to install charging stations, making charging as easy as refuelling. In addition, a new package to promote electric mobility is set to be launched.

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prevalent in society, whether in everyday business or at work. Citing the examples of America and China, the President of the European Commission has now proposed launching an autonomous driving project in Europe. Following the wave of electric mobility, the automotive industry has weakened, and options are to be developed to drive it forward again. Von der Leyen is relying on artificial intelligence to improve road safety and boost the automotive industry. The first pilot projects are to be launched, and several Italian cities have already signed up to test autonomous driving. In line with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of European industry, she has pledged support for vehicles manufactured in Europe and designed for European roads.

Battery production and charging stations

At the federal level, there are calls to promote electric mobility more effectively. In order to reduce dependence on other countries, Europe must expand its battery production to improve its position in this area. This is particularly intended to express independence from China. Talks are therefore to be held as soon as possible with the works councils of the major suppliers and companies, as well as with environmental organisations. Furthermore, the focus should not only be on large electric vehicles, but also on smaller and medium-sized ones.

The climate protection minister is not alone in calling for this, however. He also pointed out that the charging infrastructure must be significantly improved. Charging an electric vehicle should be just as easy as refuelling a vehicle with a combustion engine. To this end, he is proposing that petrol station operators be obliged to install charging points at specified prices so that every consumer has the same opportunity to get their vehicle ready to drive as quickly as possible, in cases where they cannot charge it at home.
