More comfort? More control? The era of the driving license on the mobile phone begins in 2027

The traditional driving licence is facing digital competition. The federal government intends to digitise driving licences and establish the legal framework in the German Bundestag. In addition, a consultation is being held on the fifth amendment to the Road Traffic Act.

The purpose is to: reduce bureaucracy, simplify administrative processes, and expand digital services in the transport sector.

The digital driving licence will be integrated into the 'i-Kfz app' of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and will be accepted as a driving licence in Germany. However, the physical card will still be required to complement the digital version. Furthermore, the classic driver's licence remains compulsory.

Functions of the digital driving licence:

Do not underestimate the functions of the driving licence.

It provides a legal basis for digital parking space controls. It should prevent unauthorised access. As a result, stricter measures are being introduced while security and data protection requirements are upheld.

 Limits of the digital wallet

The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI) is particularly significant in this regard. Initially, the digital driving licence will only be valid in Germany, and the European-recognised digital driving licence will be a separate project until 2030.

Future steps

By the beginning of 2027, plans for the digital driving licence will have been finalised and extended. IT security and user-friendliness will be crucial for its suitability for daily use.

This is an important step towards more modern, paperless management. Once it has been implemented and its security and acceptance have been established, it will become clear whether the digital driving licence will really be suitable for everyday use.
